Marcos Alonso chasing a contract extension at Chelsea after Thomas Tuchel revival

Marcos Alonso celebrates scoring against Burnley
It's never a bad idea to strike while the iron's hot. Marcos Alonso has certainly taken that to heart pocked. Having been restored to Chelsea's starting lineup, the left-back is now chasing an extension to his current £150,000-a-week deal which was set to end in 2023.

It was just weeks ago that the defender's people were working hard behind the scenes to try and secure a move away from Stamford Bridge. He was linked with moves to Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and a reunion with Antonio Conte at Inter Milan

With Frank Lampard favouring both Ben Chilwell and a flat back four, Marcos Alonso struggled for minutes under the former Chelsea boss. With his final appearance having been marred with dressing down following a strop to the team bus before the Blues 3-3 draw at West Brom finished.

Thomas Tuchel congratulates Marcos Alonso

Thomas Tuchel has kept to his word at giving Chelsea's stars an opportunity at a fresh start. Particularly beneficial to Marcos Alonso was the return of five at the back, a formation which the defender thrived at under Conte.

The Spaniard's name on the teamsheet for Burnley raised a few eyebrows, but he paid Tuchel's faith back in full with a goal in Chelsea's 2-0 win. And has started all but one match under the German boss' reign.

The former Real Madrid man's revival has meant that £50m Ben Chilwell has taken on the role of spectator. Despite Tuchel's assurances that 'it is not the end of Chilly's development.'

On Chilwell the new Chelsea boss added 'I see also with Chilly a very nice guy, reflective guy and an intelligent guy. I maybe felt it in the first days that is possible that he thinks a lot about this situation [with Marcos Alonso] but hopefully not too much because he can trust himself and us as a staff that he can keep pushing an we will find possibilities to reward him.'
