Chelsea 0-3 Bayern Munich: The one Chelsea faced a Canadian

Olivier Giroud is a whole mood
Before the season began no one really knew what to expect from this Chelsea side and Frank Lampard. Which means for many hopes had to be managed in terms of what they could reasonably achieve this season. Top six finish? Good cup run? Champions League knockout stages?

They made it a little too exciting to get this far, but this young side against the odds made the Champions League last-16. Only to promptly draw Bayern Munich. And yes, of course, there was that other time they played Bayern...

When the draw happened, Bayern weren't in the best of shape. Struggling with consistency and results there was a glimmer of hope of actually reaching the quarter-finals. But before a ball was even kicked, of course the Germans got their act together. Damn you Hansi Flick.

Hoping Philippe Coutinho doesn't spot him
Mason Mount, Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso all had decent efforts in an attempt to give the Blues a surprise lead, it wasn't to be. Scuffed shots, a formidable defence and Manuel Neuer - it just wasn't happening. Ultimately throughout the first half, Chelsea were left hanging on and lucky to go into the break goalless.

In hindsight, it might have been a bit cat and mouse. Where Bayern were just toying with their former foes and were always going to turn it up a level. And turn it up they did.

Just six minutes into the second half Serge Gnabry opened the scoring. Because of course the former Arsenal man was going to score. And he wasn't done there. Just three minutes later he grabbed a second. Chelsea looked shell-shocked. Like so many times this season once the goals go in, the heads go down.

Bayern were relentless in attack. And Chelsea weren't prepared to cope with their speed as well as their guile. How Thomas Muller walked away without a goal, I'll never know.

If a two away goal deficit wasn't enough of a hurdle, Robert Lewandowski added a third to all but end Chelsea's hopes of progressing this season.

Gnabry will rightly draw a lot of headlines from Tuesday night it was Canadian (and Chelsea fan) Alphonso Davies who stole the show and were ultimately the club's undoing. He plays out from left back seamlessly transitioning between defence duties and attacking threat. His pace is on another level. The moment he ran through Jorginho, Mount and Christensen to lay the ball off for Lewandowski was the moment he announced himself to football. Outside of you Bundesliga perverts of course.

At least Marcos Alonso got himself sent off in the late stages to ensure the match gets written up as Bayern beat 10-man Chelsea. Saving us a little face in those headlines. Wunderbar.

There's still a trip to Munich to be had. A place where anything can happen.
