A Banner Weekend...

East London Innit
Comedy East London Style Innit
Well, it was a weekend that Chelsea had nothing to play for, and well, that’s exactly what the team set out to do. A little pride or something for the fans for the last home match of the season would have been nice. Especially as we faced a team (despite cup defeat earlier), have only won twice out of the last 44 times, and not once in the league since 1986. To be fair, that record still stands. They did not win, but it definitely felt like a loss. Was it the lineup? Was it the knowledge that we had finally conceded our title? Was it the last home match at Stamford Bridge for some of these men? It was flat from beginning to end without many talking points aside from who upset Ramires? I thought Luiz was our feisty Brazilian. He was lucky to not have been booked earlier / more than once / only getting a caution. Pointless petulance in the face of frustration. At least the battle between Barton and Lampard was both equal and hilarious (ok, maybe funny just to me). At least Arsenal helped us out once again this season by failing to give their home support anything either, ensuring we finish first loser in second place.

Fortunately, we were all given a glimmer of hope for the future as Stefano Ivanovic took to the pitch (for those of you that remained – for the rest, I judge). With what was arguably the longest lead up to a goal since just about anyone from Arsenal, he struck the ball with confidence and has now scored as many times at the Bridge as Fernando Torres. Wicked.

However, I think the real problem with Chelsea this weekend was not engaging in some kind of banner warfare. It seems like that was the thing to do. Possibly after the Shankly Gates / Torres affair we may have deemed ourselves rightly hesitant, but we certainly missed out on the theme of the weekend.

The big one today seems to be the United banner which made its way into the Anfield Road End for yesterday’s mind-numbing affair with Sp*rs. A response to the banner posturing that Liverpool has boasted over the years. However, I’d like to point out the irony that these are the same people who claim that City are bitter and obsessed with them, yet seem to be obsessed with another club themselves. Its an irony I’m sure that will elude most Cockney Manchester reds just as they had thought it so unfair that Mario Balotelli had the nerve to enjoy a victory in their mere presence.

City pulled a banner out of thin air themselves this weekend which was even funnier than their Tevez billboard. At final whistle of their FA Cup victory, as if out of thin air, they produced their 00 years banner as a response to the naff one their neighbours have had up with the antagonizing 35 years counter. Remind me again of which of these supporters is meant to be bitter and obsessed with the other. And also unlike their neighbours, their sense of comic timing is far better and realise that its poignancy is in the initial unfurling. They don’t need to stroke their own egos by having it up for next season. Well done Citeh!

But these banners are all small potatoes and got trumped Sunday afternoon as a small, low flying plane began encircling the DW just as Wigan had drawn level with West Ham effectively relegating them to the Championship. The banner: Avram Grant – Millwall Legend. The timing of the plane could not have been more perfect. But I do wonder where Millwall supporters came up with the funds for that wind up. The Championship has just got a little more interesting. East London: good luck!
