Well, no one can say it wasn’t an interesting weekend. What they can say was that the most anticipated match of the week certainly fell flat on its face. To all the neutrals out there who’d been looking for blood....or maybe a few goals: sorry. It certainly wasn’t the game that it was billed to be, but not to worry, once our lot of sulky strikers work it out at their next slumber party, or however they bond, that is a formidable group to contend with. Liverpool, under the guidance of Steve Clarke, opted for 5 defenders to contend with the trifecta that is Drogba, Anelka and Torres – Trogelka anyone? No? Ok...anyways, these are all amazing strikers, and under the EoD they will manage to work out an attack that defensive lines will not be able to handle. Obviously, they had first date jitters. And the new one had to contend with the spotlight, Agger, and some very, very, very bitter supporters. We should see a lot more organisation (and goals) when we take on Fulham next Monday. A little more worrying was the handbags between Cech and Ivanovic. I’m sure by now they’ve shared some goulash or jumped in some frigid lake together. I’m not sure how the Eastern Europeans bond, but its probably not doing each other’s hair.
But the man who eluded the spotlight, and frankly, I felt a bit bad for came on and it was like he’d been playing with us in England his whole life.....David Luiz Moreira Marinho. To be fair, he did have the benefit of people not even realising we’d signed anyone else, and could just glide into that back line. I’d like to see him continue to partner Terry and put Branislav back out at right. Ivanovic is solid there, doesn’t forget he’s a defender *cough, Bosingwa* and it keeps him away from tackling Cech. Its a little early to say, but DLMM so far seems to be worth the money. And in terms of money, Torres will probably have cost us nothing by the end of the season if his shirt sales continue as they have been. Within the first hour of his signing, he only cost us £49M ...so, I call bargain.
And chins up, it wasn’t a complete loss. Yes, we gained absolutely no ground on anyone, however, we lost nothing on a certain team, that has a striker from the swamp. Yes, none of us have to listen to the drivel about being unbeaten anymore. Thanks to Mick McCarthy for saving us all. And it was only the second most amusing entertaining game of the weekend. OK, to be fair, that match wasn’t entertaining at all, just the result. Unlike a match game at St James Park. Oh yes, to those of you to be lucky enough to have watched this match with your gooner mates....I am terribly jealous. After their first three goals, I opted to watch the Citeh match (and by watch Citeh I mean, watch about 2 minutes and then have a nap). I felt bad for the Geordies who had lost their new icon and somehow thought that him sitting in the stands watching them would have actually helped stopped the bleeding. It was painful. But thankfully, I was woken up by one Joey Barton. Ok, obviously not him personally, but by the time his second penalty was scored, I was back in this match as much as Newcastle was. Either way, until now, no team has ever blown a 4 goal lead. So congratulations on your record setting weekend Arsenal. It was truly the best part! ;)
No weekend match for us this week, so Monday it is!
And its not all bad news. Unlike just about everyone else, the Chelsea boys have stood up to be counted for their country and will be representing in the international friendlies this week. Ashley Cole was named England's player of the year, and being arguably one of if not -the- best full back in the world, he's fully deserving. Nice to see the boo boys don't get to vote. In addition to that, with 'injuries' to Rio and Saint Stevie.....it appears that Frank Lampard is set to captain England for the first time ever. If you get a chance to watch England on Wednesday, do it!
