Math Edition - Technically Chelsea still has a shot

***apparently LiveJournal has deemed this week inappropriate for comedic photographs, will attempt to beat the system later!**

Hello All!

My apologies for the delay (OR you are quite welcome for the reprieve). Its sometimes hard from within this bubble that is football, but sometimes there are matters outside of this little orb that superscede anything to do with the fun and games (or gigantic tragedy if you’re a Hammer that is the league table). I had a bit of a personal nightmare this weekend, causing this delay in the post mortem (almost) of our season.

So, proper stoic chins up and all that and on to the football.

Going into this match, against a team that we have a superb record against, you would have thought we might just have the edge. We currently had the best defensive record in England (no, I’m totally serious) AND were the most in form team in not only England, but within the top 5 European Leagues (blah, blah, yes England isn’t Europe and all that). But still, momentum was in our favour, and with the gods of luck and Heurelho Gomes on our side, we had to have some internal belief, shouldn’t we? Watching the first half hour of Sunday’s game I would accuse you of being a complete liar for just telling me all those meaningless statistics that I just bored you with. What a hot mess! There’s just not even a better explanation. Despite being on Team Eyebrow, I was somewhat worried about his team selection. He got it wrong for Champions League, and has been teasing the press with what his team might be. Really, will he or won’t he with our Spaniard. For lack of a better phrase and because I haven’t had enough vodka caffeine yet today, the Eyebrow of Doom went balls to the wall and picked our best lineup. I find no fault with his team selection. This team scored 9 goals in 3 games and headed by Didi was like a Juggernaut of offense. But it was not to be. Some very key players picked the wrong day to have, arguably, their worst games to date. Despite his protests of it not being him, yes, the prodigal son at the back had a terrible first half and was rightly subbed off at half time making way for a brilliant performance from Alex. For the knee jerkers out there, yes, it was brutal of Luiz, but it was one game, so shhhh. And Ashley Cole, oh Ashley....just terrible. Valencia is in no way better than Ronaldo. (For the record, I’m actually resenting myself for typing anything positive about that show pony, but what can I do). Ashley has been able to control Ronaldo, Messi, etc. The best players in the world. Surely Valencia could not have been that intimidating. Surely this has to do with Cheryl’s debut on US network telly or his mobile phone service being cut off or something. Again, brutal timing to have a bad day at the office.

To those who got to make the trip up to Manchester, you all sounded brilliant! Obviously we had the better supporters up from London. Also a kudos for you to get Mr. Coleen to react. I mean, really you only need to wink in the direction of a United player in order for them to lose their minds, but still, I felt an odd sense of pride in you for getting him to flick the Vs. If just one of you had managed a wink, we could have had a full blown riot. ;)

For those of you with your heads still down or still grumbling, you can’t seriously say that you thought we’d even be in this position now. The magic Eyebrow and the team, once recovered from all those ridiculous tears, pulls, malaria etc, these men pulled together and made up a 16 point deficit in just under two months. Say what you will, but be sure to give credit where credit is due. And for those complaining that the youth haven’t been given a chance this second half, I’d like to point out it’s because we needed to win these matches – which we did, faltering only really this weekend. It’s also been fantastic to have players out on loan getting experience at Bolton or in the hard and fast paced championship. It prepares them for seasons to come and is absolutely better than them playing in the reserve league or keeping Zhirkov company on the bench.

We have guaranteed our position in Champions League again for next year (and for the record Champions League, we’re still not talking), which again, a few months ago, was looking like it could be hard pressed to make. But if that’s not enough to cheer you up, just always remember, you could be a West Ham supporter.
