Welcome Back Mr. Kotter......er, The Bison

Once a Pikey...
Rooney finally pokes his head out of the team bus on Saturday.

OK, admittedly, I was a little worried going into the weekend, and rightly so. Say what you will about the winless Hammers, but they definitely gave us a go and were far better than the final score reflected. That being said, they've taken a strip out of perfection and we have now finally conceded our first goal of the season. At least it was a really nice goal that did us in, rather than some calamitous affair. You know, somewhat like the one that Kalou got to take credit for which was more like a pinball goal than the playstation football Carletto has touted. I can't help but wonder though if JT hadn't come off, if that would have happened. Nonetheless, it was another three points leaving us with only 34 more times to do this. Easy, right? It could be with Essien keeps performing like he did on Saturday. He was unstoppable, much like the Essien of pre-injury(ies). Maybe this is why we didn't need to make any big signings over the summer, we've got one of, if not the best player in the game back and match fit. And with only one header to his name before this, seeing two in one game could be indictive of the wonders that we may see from him over the coming months in the League, and maybe in a little matter of the Champions League.

Speaking of which, we get to open up in Slovakia. Out of our last eight first games of the group stages, we have won 6 of those matches. And out of the eleven times on the road in Europe, we have only seen two defeats. Its all looking pretty good for Wednesday. And although MSK Zilina may not be a regular face in Champions League for us, here are some things to know:

-Slovakia's most consistent team
-came to Villa park in 2008 and beat Aston Villa
-we played them in 2002 in qualifying rounds beating them over two legs 5-0
-Stadium Pod Dubnom – only holds around 11,000 supporters
-player to watch: Momodou Ceesay

Kick off is at 2.45pm and will be shown at Scallywag's. For those of us who can't get out of work or school, there will be a replay at 6.45pm. How much restraint do you have to not check the scores?!?

And although I thought I'd be done with RooneyGate, it would certainly be remiss of me not to talk about Saturday as it totally relates to our often chastised players. After the Terry affair broke, he stood his ground and played in the next game, knowing it would be volatile as it was Burnley away. And not only did he take the jeers, he was pure class defensively and managed a goal. Not only that, he then faced Bridgey and City a couple of weeks later. He took it on the chin. And let's not forget all the harassment that Ashley gets from the Gooners, and just about everyone else. The list goes on. The point is, they take it like men and are professionals. Where was Roo on Saturday? He was meant to play and even practiced the day before, but SAF decided it was too volatile for his delicate flower. The same man who through Beckham to the lions when he was receiving death threats. No judgement on the affair, but as a professional, he should have been out there helping his team get only a point at Goodison Park rather than back at the hotel soliciting more of his granny prostitutes.

Enjoy the game on Wednesday! I'm sure all our boys will get off the bus and play!
