Difficult to fill in for a club legend - moreso if you're name is Benitez. Fact. |
Everyone take a moment and think to yourselves - when is premature ever really a good thing?
No instances? None? .... Exactly.
But thanks to a lot of column inches needing filled before the transfer window bursts open with aplomb, there needs to some other more 'substantial' controversy. What better story to focus on than Chelsea supporters and who they should support. The 'hows' of supporting were covered quite thoroughly earlier this season when Chelsea supporters stole Arsenal's favourite song - BOO.
There is no denying that eight goals at Christmas feels good. Spirits were certainly buoyed. Combine that with the memorable day out at Elland Road and you've got a whole lot of happy faces around SW6. But should that mean those happy little faces should all look to one man in a somewhat better fitting suit than when he first arrived?
No. No they shouldn't.
Not because the only people better at holding a grudge than my nan are football supporters. Not because Benitez has refused to apologise for comments he's made before. Or for commenting on players that he is in no position to discuss regarding their contracts. Not because of his zonal marking, his taking a treble winning club and forcing them to mid-table mediocrity. Or even for the fact he divides the players by language.
The reason for their justified hesitancy is basic. It is for the simple reason that two outstanding results does not make the man as it does not make of break the club's season. If anyone were to write off a player, a manager, or a club on the back of two poor performances it would be ludicrous. So why are Chelsea supporters at this stage being questioned about their backing of Benitez? These were fantastic wins. But a little perspective would be good. Those wins were against a club in the championship and another battling to avoid relegation.
These wins were also on the back of losing the Club World Cup and a couple league matches where Chelsea couldn't score if they were in a brothel and covered in £20 notes.
So before questioning whether Chelsea supporters should really be throwing their devoted affection behind the sizeable continental hospitality specialist, papers should be asking one question about the weekend. How sh*t were United for Ferguson to pull the attempted murder / lucky to be alive card out?

Well, prematurity is better for me than the wife!
ReplyDeletehaha ... so often the case. Selfish. ;)
DeleteIt really hurts me that the fat bastard is going to get any credit at all. The fact that he doesn't hook Torres when he is playing absolutely shit says it all for me. In the final minutes today Hazard broke free and got clear of the Everton defence, he had Moses on one side and Torres on the other. Unfortunately he chose to listen to FSW (give the ball to Fernando at every opportunity)and he blew yet another gilt edged chance when Moses could have knocked it in with his pecker. Our manaher couldn't find his arse with both hands.
