Le Sulk Lights Up our Lives....I mean Slovakia

Get Down On it...

Oh, its definitely that time of year again when you get to try and get out of work early on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons because it is the return of Champions League! The CL has been a cruel mistress to us in the past, but from the time of the draw onwards, there is always promise in the air. And with the final being in London Town, it would be poetic justice to finally claim the prize we've been ridiculously close to so many times in the past. Before getting to our own match, I'd like to give a shout out to our friends up north, The Glasgow Rangers. They not only defended like their lives depended on it, preventing Fergie's Carling Cup squad from finding the net, but they also were singing about us before the match just to wind up the United Supporters. And for that, I thank them. As a sidenote, I know I spend a lot of time bashing them, but I genuinely want to send best wishes to Velencia. No one likes to see an injury like that and I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Our biggest threat in the group suffered a loss thanks to an Own Goal (who I thought was just United's Top Scorer). But with Own Goal in Action, Marseille have failed to gain a point from their opening match. Before we kicked off there was a lot of concern that we'd need to really put a stamp on the competition from the get go, and that we did. With goals coming from The Bison, Danny Sturridge and a brace from Le Sulk, it was all good up front. Toss up for best goal celebration between Anelka mocking the French Federation and Danny for his So You Think You Can Dance Audition. The dance definitely edged it out for me, although Anelka could have easily passed him if he had in fact mimed being a clown or some such like squirting a fake flower at someone or pretending he got out of a really little car to really stick it to FFF. And the kids getting a run out. Not only did Danny get out there, but Macheachran, Kakuta, and van Aanholt all got to see Champions League action. A fantastic night for them!

With all the good comes a little bad. We got sloppy in all the goal scoring fun and let in a ridiculous goal. I will take Scott Parker's on Saturday, but this one was just silly and shouldn't have been. But it seems without someone (Lamps) ensuring that we keep our shape, we get a little loose and let these guys in behind our back line. No doubt Carletto and his eyebrow of doom will ensure to tighten things up.

This weekend, we're hosting Blackpool who are currently on as many wins as Manchester United, so could give us a run for our money. They certainly surprised Wigan and Newcastle and have only really been put in their place by Arsenal. They are going to come at us with their version of attractive attacking football, and we should not be quick to dismiss them especially after last night's conceded goal. Lampard should be back in midfield with the Bison and as Drogba is not serving any silly suspensions in the league, he's sure to start up front for us. The only question is who will partner him. Anelka was magnificient last night but will he be rested for the Carling Cup or will that be Mr Boogie Shoes himself, Danny Sturridge.

Although we have late kick off on Sunday, some of you may want to make the early trek out to the pub as Liverpool and Manchester United will go at it at 8.30am. Surely United won't do 3 draws in a row, but could they see a loss? Pepe Reina, although got off to a rocky start in his first game has got back to form and was absolutely outstanding last week and rescued a point for Liverpool. He'll be tough for the mis-firing (on the pitch, not off) Rooney to get one past.

Hope to see you Sunday!

21 goals in 5 games.....roll on the weekend.
